The Gallery Oxford Town Hall

Step back in time and enter the West Indian/Caribbean Front Room/Living Room of the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. See items that made up the typical West Indian/Caribbean Front Room/Living Room of the time. The iconic display Cabinet, Radiogram, drinks trolley or drinks cabinet. The paraffin heater and the numerous ornaments, such as the multi-coloured glass fish and vase, crochet doilies, that make up the must have items to dress the front room/living room. The drinks glasses and the drinks of the time, Wray & Nephew white rum, Mount Gay, Appleton, Captain Morgan, Stones Ginger Wine, VP sherry, Harvey’s Bristol Cream, Babycham, Cherry B, to name a few.

Listen to the oral histories of members of the Windrush generation and learn of their experience of coming to ‘the mother country’ and the often hostile reception they encountered.

This exhibition is brought to you as a collaboration between the Museum of Oxford, ACKHI & BK.LUWO., the support of members of the Windrush Years – Next Generations Planning Group.

We would like to thank all of the participants, whose oral histories form the listening post. For the loan of items featured in the exhibition. And to our funder the Oxfordshire Local History Association,.
